Welcome to Charlie's Redhouse Farm...Our latest project, and one we are most proud of! With the changing economy, a growing concern for the environment & sustainable technologies, Paul Overgaag (owner of The Red House Restaurant and Charlie's Kitchen), has chosen to bring fresh organic foods to center stage. He has always sought the best way to bring value to the menu, as well as fresh, local food to the table – what better way to do that, than by supplying his restaurants from his very own local, certified organic farm?
In February, 2009, Paul purchased 64 acres of organically certified farm & forest land in Winchendon, Massachusetts. Complete with a beautiful, rustic barn & farm house, the place has come to be known as Charlie's Redhouse Farm, and is currently being run by one of Paul's older brothers, Kees Overgaag. A Holland native, Kees moved to the United States this summer from Laserre, France, where he spent several years apprenticing at an organic farm. A truly hard worker, and a real outdoorsman at heart, Kees shares his brother's optimism and enthusiasm about all of the wonderful possibilities for the farm, and the restaurants.
The farm itself, which was known formerly as the Big Red Barn Farm, maintained its organic certification throughout the years, but more recently had become unproductive, and was suffering from neglect. In the first season alone, the Overgaag brothers have undertaken a great transformation of the property. Aside from relatively small cosmetic projects like re-roofing the giant barn, clearing the ever-encroaching brush, adding new refrigeration & work facilities, as well as simply cleaning the place up, they have also begun major infra-structure improvements such as solar-powered hot water & electricity, and are currently laying the groundwork for geo-thermally heated green houses. It's all pretty exciting.
What all of this boils down to is that patrons of the Red House Restaurant and Charlie's Kitchen in Harvard Square can look forward to an abundance of locally produced fruits, vegetables, eggs, and even meats to be arriving soon on its menus, raised exclusively for them to enjoy. We have already enjoyed delicious apples, pears, assorted salad greens & Asian greens, as well as squash, potatoes, spinach, peas, squash, blackberries, elderberries, and eggs -- just to name a few things -- from the farm in our very first seasons. Our customers' appreciation & enthusiasm for these items has been truly rewarding.
Our newest addition is our fresh herb garden, which has been a great source of basil for delicious pesto, as well as fresh cut parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme (just like the song!). We expect to move forward and grow with each season, bringing the best food and value to you, directly from farm to plate.
As always, we appreciate your support & welcome your feedback any time. Thank you, and enjoy!
